Participating in stroller-friendly races is a great way to stay fit and maintain an active lifestyle a parent. As the creator of Mom’s Little Running Buddy, Katie McFarland knows a thing or two about running with strollers. We asked her to fill us in on some of her best stroller running safety tips. Here’s what she had to say:

1. Follow Etiquette.

Do your research. Find out the proper stroller running etiquette for each race you’re running. Most races will tell you ahead of time whether strollers will line up in the back or on the sides. Whatever the directions, make sure you know them and apply them for your own safety and the safety of other runners.

2. Put Safety First.

If you’re a more competitive runner, running a race with a stroller, you may want to actually run instead of stroll.  If that’s the case, once you get into the corral with other runners, determine whether you should line up towards the front of all the other strollers. It’s not a selfish thing, but rather a safety play.  Trying to run and dodge other strollers can be dangerous.  Just make sure to keep an open line of communication before, during, and after the race with your fellow runners.

3. Stay Alert.

Watch out for runners ahead of you who are walking or casually strolling, adapting your pace accordingly. If you’re not completely used to running with a stroller, it can take some time to figure out the best way to maneuver around other participants. It’s always best to err on the side of caution for everyone’s safety.

Running with your little one may seem intimidating at first, but with a few safety precautions and a little practice, you’ll be a pro in no time. Check out Katie’s blog for more tips and advice.
